Best Practices for this Site
- Events at St. John’s and Events in the Wider Community pages need to be reviewed and updated each week.
They need to sync up with the events in the weekly bulletin.
- Formation Friday essays on the Adult Formation page
- Clergy Transition page needs to be updated as the process progresses
- Give the top menu a one word name.
- Make sure menu names are generic (e.g. no dates). Changing the name of a menu item will result in a “Page Not Found” error if someone has saved the page’s URL in their Favorites.
- Make all of the top menu items “Non Clickable” so that they all behaved the same way.
- Save the Web Page to have copy of layout and text
- From the actual Web Site (not the Weebly editor), right click on a blank spot on the web page
- Select Save As...
- Select Save Type as Webpage, Complete and click save button
- Click Yes to replacing saved file
- Tablets (android, apple and microsoft)
- Assume that those viewing the site are NOT members of St. John’s and probably not Episcopalian. An example of what this means is that we need to add a sentence or two on what a Vestry is. Not all Christian denominations have a governance structure like we have. We need to look at each page as marketing to strangers. Make sure they understand our message and make sure the message is important to those who are not us. This is not easy to do and we need to have many looking at the site from this perspective to make sure we are speaking to strangers.
- Since the target audience are not our members, don't put on the site anything that could be communicated to members in another way. For example, do not include the membership profile form on the site.
- Put information that changes frequently on different pages than static information and minimize the number of pages that must be updated frequently. For example, put recurring activities on a separate page from one-time events. Also avoid specifics on static pages that may change in the future. There are currently 5 pages that need to be updated regularly.

- Put detail information on a topic only in one place. Use links to reference that information on other pages. Don’t be afraid of putting a topic on more than one page. It increases the chances of someone finding it and by using links it doesn’t increase the maintenance.
- There is a "Page last Published" date at the top of each page. This lets us and viewers know how up to date the information is. Revise the date every time a page is changed.
- Do not imbed pictures within text boxes, imbedded pictures do not always show up properly when viewed from other devices like phones.
