Outreach - Doing God's Work in the Community

Neighbor to Neighbor Fund
Picture
Neighbor to Neighbor is a New Hartford community supported fund that was established in response to requests for financial assistance from families in need.  It is funded solely by the generosity of local organizations, businesses and monetary donations made by members of the community and is administered through the town of New Hartford.

St John's is a proud supporter of the Neighbor to Neighbor Fund. We have had a representative on the Fund Committee. We have raised funds through church activities and received grants for N2N from the Diocese. Parishioners have generously given to N2N directly and through St. John's.

Prayer Shawl Knitting Group
Picture
Dear Friends:
I do a lot of knitting all year long, however, winter makes me think of yarn, lots of yarn. Knitters at St. John's knit prayer shawls, which are then blessed and given to someone in need of comfort and prayer. I did not send in a photo of Where I Saw God this Summer, but I see Him in my knitting, actually in other's work, as well.  He is in the colors, stitches and patterns, and in the people who create these beautiful items.  He is in the friendships knitting brings.

Jesse Tree Christmas Drive
For over 22 years St. John's has been making the holidays a little brighter for families in need in our community. Our Jesse Tree Drive raises funds for 20 to 25 children and their families. We purchase gift cards for presents and food for those children and work with Covenant to Care and DCF in Torrington to distribute those cards.

Garden Scholarship

St. John's awards a scholarship to a local high school senior that performs 25 hours of work in the Alison and Charles Gill Memorial Garden.

Mardi Gras Jazz Concert

For over 20 years St.  John's has hosted the Northwestern Regional School's High School and Middle School Jazz Bands on "Fat Tuesday". These concerts have raised money for the school's music program and for our Little Free Pantry.  It is one of the highlights of the year for the kids with ice-cream sundaes after the concerts.

Community Events

St. Johns and our parishioners are involved in many of the community's activities. Some we sponsor and some we participate in.

2022 Easter Service
Services at Cherry Brook
Cherry Brook Health Care Center is a senior living care facility. Our Rector with volunteers from the parish have conducted Eucharist Services for residents there. While this mission was suspended during the COVID Pandemic, we were able to have services in 2022. It is our hope that we can resume this important mission with a new Priest In Charge.

Open Door Soup Kitchen
The Open Door Soup Kitchen is a ministry of St. James Episcopal Church Winsted.  They provides breakfast and lunches for those who are food insecure in the area. Pre COVID we had a team who made lunch once a month. We are planning to restart this ministry. Stay tuned for more information as those plans progress.
